The third generation of the petite Smart Fortwo bowed out of production in 2024 (see video), but a replacement is already underway. It is called Smart #2 and is currently running its first road tests wearing a test mule body atop new tech.
Since the entire bodywork seen here is temporary, there’s no point discussing it. Instead, let’s focus on what we know about the new Smart #2. It is based on a platform called the ECA (Electric Compact Architecture). Co-designed with Geely, it is intended for vehicles no more than three meters (117 inches) long. The powertrain is fully electric and drives the rear axle.
It remains open whether the Smart #2 will receive a Cabriolet version like its predecessor did. It’s also a good question whether Geely will keep it all-electric: considering the so-so sales of EVs, it might as well turn it into a serial/range-extender hybrid.
We should learn more when the urban supermini debuts next year.
