Stellantis unveils the STLA architecture, promises up to 700 km (435 miles) of range

Stellantis has officially presented its latest unitized car platform, the STLA Medium. It is the first out of the automobile corporation’s four platforms designed for worldwide production of compact-to-mid-size vehicles. It supports battery sizes enough for 700 km (435 miles) of range on a charge.

The company intends to use the platform to build C- and D-class light passenger cars and SUVs. These vehicle categories accounted for nearly 50% of all worldwide vehicle sales in 2022. Stellantis has 26 models matching this description in its portfolio.

With the maximum supported traction battery capacity of 98 kilowatt-hours, the platform delivers what the automaker claims to be the best-in-class power efficiency of under 14 kWh per 100 km. The minimum driving range supported is not bad either at 500 km (310 miles). The charging speed maxes out at 2.4kW per minute.

All EVs built on the STLA Medium base will have a front-wheel or all-wheel drive system at their disposal. The output will be capped at 388 PS (383 hp / 285 kW). Body lengths from 4.3 to 4.9 meters (14.1–16.1 feet) and wheelbases from 2.7 to 2.9 meters (8.86–9.51 feet) are supported by design. The ground clearance can be raised to 220 mm (8.6 inches), making it feasible for SUVs.

When it is complete, the STLA family will consist of four platforms – Small, Medium, Large and Frame. All four will feature a modular construction and have low energy consumption, making them suitable both for the current and the upcoming types of power cells, Stellantis claims.
