Toyota Agya and its peers get updated in Asia

The Toyota Agya, one of Southeastern Asia’s cheapest cars also known as the Daihatsu Ayla and Perodua Axia in some markets, has now stepped into its second generation.

All three models – which are closely related, but not identical – now come based on a new platform known as the DNGA. It brings along a number of modern features, including ESP – which is now part of the standard equipment. The body benefits from a stiffer construction and is 120 mm longer with 70 mm of added wheelbase.

Both the Ayla and the Axia are powered by the same old 1.0-liter three-pot rated at 67 PS (66 hp / 49 kW). Things have played out differently for the second-gen Toyota Ayga, though, which benefits from a switch to a new three-cylinder unit rated at 88 PS (87 hp / 65 kW). A CVT gearbox replaces the four-speed automatic transmission, which is no longer available for the trio.

Inside, the dashboard looks lsightly revamped and a larger 9-inch infotainment display is now listed under options. The Perodua Axia additionally gets a digital dashboard option.
