2027 VW Atlas teaser hints at close Chinese relation

It looks like the next-gen Volkswagen Atlas for North America is a rebadged Teramont Pro for China (see video). For its own part, the automaker insists it’s an all-new and original design.

The crossover SUV is slated for premiere at the NYIAS-2026 in April. In the meantime, we only have one interior shot to go by. Taken from the front passenger’s perspective, it reveals backlit door panels, an audio speaker grille at the a-pillar, and an 11.6-inch touchscreen display with an Atlas logo. All three are found in the China-made Teramont Pro.

All technical details remain to be revealed. The Teramont Pro comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine turbocharged to 276 PS (272 hp / 210 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It needs 7.6 seconds to get from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph). It is thoroughly possible that the U.S. version gets the same or similar specs.

In February this year, Volkswagen let multiple car news websites have a test-drive of the 2027 Atlas and post photos of its exterior. If anything, these photos reaffirm our conviction that the SUV is built on the Teramont Pro underpinnings. It’s not necessarily bad, because the latter uses the latest revision of the company’s MQB Evo platform. We’ll have to wait until the show starts for full details.
