Check out this buggy by Louis Vuitton’s leather maker Berluti

The Berluti brand, which is a part of Louis Vuitton Group and designer of the finest leather clothing, footwear and accessories, has added an unusual product to its lineup: a beach buggy.

The Berluti Buggy draws inspiration from the Meyers Manx model that U.S.-based company B. F. Meyers & Co. built in 1964 based on the Volkswagen Beetle chassis. It had been in production from 1964 until 1971, and a limited edition emerged in 2000.

Berluti once again takes the Beetle chassis as the starting point, along with its 1.6-liter opposite-four engine with a carburetor and 90 hp (67 kW) at the output end. It wraps that chassis in a body manufactured from a polyester-based composite material (the Manx had a GFRP body), reducing its weight to mere 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). A roll-over bar should protect the passengers if it ever turns over.

Whereas the Meyers Manx was conceptualized as a simple and affordable vehicle, the Berluti Buggy virtually screams luxury. The entire cabin comes wrapped in expensive Venezia leather, and Chief Fashion Designer Kris Van Assche supplies exclusive upholstery adorned with special graphics and monograms. The soft top and the removable leather trunk get the same graphic designs, and the manufacturer’s logo at the front end combines brass and palladium.

Each Berluti Buggy will be put together according to the individual clients’ wishes, so the prices will also be strictly individual. Berluti does not specify where the production will take place; its current headquarters is in Paris. France.
