BYD Denza Z racer spotted braving the North Loop

According to these spy shots made at the Nürburgring and posted on Carscoops, Chinese automaker BYD has been testing its all-electric Denza Z Racing coupe with an extreme aero kit, hoping to inscribe its name in the Hall of Fame of the formidable German track.

The regular Denza Z supercar debuted in China in early June. It packed a trio of electric motors jointly rated at 1,604 PS (1,582 hp / 1,180 kW). The Racing version of it doesn’t have any more power than that, but still enjoys a significant aerodynamic advantage with its purpose-made body kit capable of generating up to 2,000 kilos (4,405 pounds) of downforce.

When announcing the car, BYD also mentioned an extremely sophisticated smart suspension setup, so that’s also something to look forward to. Just keep in mind that the car spotted on the track and pictured in the gallery above is technically still a prototype, meaning it may change before the production starts.

It’s worth noting that the current Nürburgring lap record among mass-produced EVs is held by another BYD vehicle, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme. That coupe packs 3,019 PS (2,978 hp / 2,220 kW) and completes the Nordschleife in 6 minutes 59 seconds, as demonstrated in October last year.

Orders for the regular Denza Z are already being processed in China starting around U.S. $100,000. The supercar is also available in the United Kingdom right now, starting at nearly twice the quoted domestic price. The Racing spec is still in the works.
