GM & LG announce their own LMR battery R&D

General Motors has officially partnered up with LG Energy to develop an innovative type of lithium-ion battery cell featuring a manganese-rich cathode (the so-called LMR technology). The same tech is being looked into by multiple other automakers right now.

The prismatic power cells are envisioned as a very similar, but cheaper alternative to the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells. They are praised for their superior overall safety and low risk of fire (on par with LFP cells). Although versatile, they perform best in large, fully electric SUVs and pickup trucks.

The company hopes to launch mass production in 2028.
