Hyundai previews the Ioniq 3

Hyundai has revealed what it calls the Concept Three – an early design study ultimately destined to distill into a mass-produced B-class EV for Europe. It sports a sleek exterior and a cheery light-hued cabin trimmed with recycled materials.

The company doesn’t explicitly call the subcompact “Ioniq 3”, but we expect it to be called exactly that when it reaches production next year. Described by the design team as an Aero Hatch, it sports a sloped roofline with slanted glass inserts in the rear doors and seems to have no b-pillars. A sizable spoiler can be seen in the back, and the yellow glass all around rhymes with the color of the wheels. Pixelated LED lights can be seen in the fake radiator grille.

The interior makes intensive use of synthetic textiles derived from reprocessed plastic waste. Interestingly enough, there are no big displays in sight – just two clusters of relatively small screens to either side of the steering wheel.

Size-wise, the EV is 4,287 mm long, 1,940 mm wide and 1,428 mm tall (167.5 x 75.8 x 55.8 inches). The wheelbase amounts to 2,722 mm (106.3 inches), making the car considerably larger than the Hyundai Inster but smaller than the Kona Electric.

All technical specifications are pending. Rumor has it the production car will utilize a 400V electric system and support two battery sizes – 58.3 and 81.4 kWh. The former should be good for 420 km (261 miles) and the latter for 585 km (363 miles) of range. Both should be able to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in under eight seconds, but this remains to be confirmed.
