An interesting video cropped up on the YouTube channel named The TFJJ, featuring a Mercedes F200 Imagination Concept driven with joysticks instead of the wheel and the pedals.
The car was caught on camera as it entered an auto show in London. Mercedes introduced it as a concept 26 years ago, replacing all conventional controls with steer-by-wire joysticks. Elsewhere, the one-off design study had digital displays spanning its entire dashboard’s width and video cameras instead of side mirrors – in other words, it wasn’t that different from the conceptual vehicles of today.
Other innovative features the F200 Imagination previewed included Bi-xenon headlamps you could focus and defocus, safety airbags mounted on side windows, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive suspension and voice recognition – the latter particularly impressive for a 1996MY car.
A V12 under the hood drove the rear wheels with 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque through an automatic gearbox.
