Toyota Raise e-Smart breaks cover with all-new REX powertrain

Toyota has unveiled a new modification of its Raize compact crossover for Japan. Called the e-Smart, it is a hybrid with its IC engine disconnected from the wheels. Prices start at ¥2,163,000, or $19,000.

A single electric motor drives the wheels with 106 PS (105 hp / 78 kW) and 178 Nm (131 lb-ft) of torque. A naturally aspirated petrol engine provides power for it, exerting 82 PS (81 hp / 60 kW) and 105 Nm (77 lb-ft) of torque. Unlike the standard gas-powered Raize model (see video), the e-Smart will be strictly front-wheel-drive and not available with AWD.

A feature called S-PDL (Smart Pedal) takes advantage of regenerative brakes to enable acceleration and braking using the same pedal. The gas tank holds 33 liters of fuel, and consumption averages out at 3.5 liters per 100 km (67.2 MPG).

The entry-level non-hybrid spec also uses the same naturally aspirated engine now, hitting the front axle with 87 PS (84 hp / 64 kW) and 113 Nm (83 lb-ft) of torque. A turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder spec benefits from AWD and has 98 PS (97 hp / 72 kW) and 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) of torque. Both have CVT for the transmission. Prices start from ¥1,707,000 and ¥1,984,800, respectively ($15,000 and $17,500 USD).

Later on, Toyota plans to implement the e-Smart powertrain in other Japan-only compacts.
