China’s most popular EV gets a convertible version

Wuling, Chinese car marque co-founded between SAIC and General Motors, has unveiled a Cabrio version of its best-selling Hongguang Mini EV. According to AutoHome, being barely over 3 meters (9.8 feet) long probably makes it the world’s smallest convertible.

The standard Hongguang Mini EV starts from 32,800 Yuan in China, explaining why it is the best-selling electric car on that market. The open version keeps the same exterior styling, but gets a power-assisted cloth top. The addition of a trunk space for storing the top when folded down and the roll bars means there are no longer any rear seats. The taillights are different, and the manufacturer points out high-tensile steels now account for 65 percent of the car’s structure.

Except for the missing rear seats, the interior stays unchanged – but buyers are restricted to the top trim level. This implies a digital dashboard, a modest-sized infotainment display, a reversing camera and telematic equipment for remote control over some in-car functions.

Only two trim schemes are available for the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV: black and red or black and white.

Out of all motors available for the standard supermini, the topless version gets only the most powerful one. It makes 41 PS (40 hp / 30 kW) and 110 Nm (81 lb-ft) of torque powered by a 26.5-kWh battery and covers up to 280 km (174 miles) on a charge.

Prices remain to be announced. The standard Hongguang Mini EV starts from 32,800 Yuan and maxes out at 72,800 Yuan.
