The latest YouTube video from Carwow pits together two technologically related VW Group cars – the Audi R8 Spyder and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo. Both two-door supercars with seven-speed DCTs and four driven wheels have been subjected to multiple rolling and standing races, as well as a brake test. As one would expect, the Italian coupe triumphed over the German roadster, but the advantage wasn’t that great.
Starting with the Audi R8 Spyder, it tips the scales at 1,695 kg (3,737 lbs) and packs a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 with 620 PS (612 hp / 456 kW) and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. It costs from £167,520 in the UK, which translates into U.S. $215,300 at the current rates.
The Huracan Evo is slightly lighter than its rival at 1,422 kg (3,135 lbs) without liquids and packs a modest power advantage. At the same time, it costs significantly more at £198,307 ($255,000).
All quarter-mile standing races saw the Huracan effortlessly defeat the R8. Matt Watson, who drove the R8 in these attempts, said he blamed launch control. In the end, the Lambo was able to score a 10.8-second quarter-mile run and the Audi came behind it with 12 seconds. According to Watson, he took the R8 Spyder for a test run before filming and ended up with 11.1 seconds – a much better result that didn’t make it into the video.
The reviewers then made three half-mile runs starting at 80 km/h (50 mph). Different electronic settings were used every time to test the performance of the cars’ on-board systems. The first victory went to Audi, but Lamborghini still won the remaining two. In the end, the Ingolstadt supercar got back at its bully by stopping way sooner at a brake test.
