Underground Racing has set a remarkable new record with its tuned Audi R8, completing a quarter mile in 6.94 seconds and hitting 350 km/h (218 mph) in the process.
In its stock form, the R8 packs a potent V10 engine rated at 570 PS (562 hp / 419 kW). The tuning company hasn’t revealed all the details yet, but its website lists tuning packs rated up to 3,000 horsepower (2,200 kW). These rely on dual Precision turbos and racing fuel for maximum output. The R8 seen here has both boxes ticked, so it could be making around that much.
What we do know is that not even a heavy-duty 12-plate clutch was enough to efficiently deliver all that power to the ground. Underground Racing said it noticed the transmission slipping at the two top gears during the test. Preliminary calculations showed that the Audi was capable of a 6.8-second run and a 362 km/h (225 mph) top speed, so it looks like it wasn’t in its best shape that evening.
We are going to learn more soon enough, because a stronger clutch has already been ordered. Once it is installed, the world’s fastest R8 will hit the drag strip again and try to improve on its time.
