An attention-grabbing and over-the-top 1970 Cadillac Eldorado cropped up on Bring a Trailer the other day only to fail to sell with the bidding topping out at $25,500. Its creator, the famous designer George Barris, equipped it with a wild and kitschy ‘70s-style body kit and an ever wilder handmade steering wheel. Let’s check it out.
On the outside, the two-door ride flaunts Superfly headlights, Landau roof trims, golden-colored spinners for hubcaps and an original hood ornament. The result may strike you as gaudy, but it’s certainly bold and period-correct, too.
That said, it still somehow manages to pale in comparison to the interior. The steering wheel just steals the spotlight with its hand-applied ornaments, intricate metalworks and what we assume to be a fake gold finish. The hub houses a bulky Cadillac badge, and the rest of the passenger space is awash with fine off-white leather.
According to the listing, famous U.S. basketball player Charlie Scott forked over $13,000 for this Eldorado when it was still new. Carscoops claims it translates to roughly $110,000 in modern U.S. money, and that sounds about right for a fashion accessory like this one.
