Bavarian Econs Tech is auctioning off a remarkable 1972 BMW 2002 electromod on Bring a Trailer. The 53-year-old coupe lost its original drivetrain to the sands of time, so it needed an adequate replacement – and the company delivered.
Where the engine and the transmission used to be a new electric motor now resides next to a fairly small battery pack. Sources from a Tesla Model S, it churns out 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW) along with 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque and is good for 200 kilometers (124 miles) of range per charge.
Now, this may not sound so hot, but consider that 400V power internals enable the petite German ride to replenish most of its charge within minutes. Even more importantly, the whole thing weighs just 1,088 kilograms (2,399 pounds). That’s only around 80 kilos (176 lbs) more than the original did.
According to the German tuner, the car arrived at the workshop in excellent condition with only 31,000 km (less than 20,000 miles) on the odometer. The exterior was so pristine and rust-free that it was left untouched. The interior was also largely preserved, but the company added plenty of modern creature comforts there including bucket seats, an AC, new floor mats and a Bluetooth-enabled multimedia system. An eight-channel Helix audio system with an added subwoofer made it on board, too, while the fit-and-finish largely stayed stock.
Wrapping up the project, Bavarian Econs Tech replaced the wheels with 13-inch Alpina rollers and made the suspension height-adjustable. The electric BMW 2002 currently sits at $55,000 with three days before the auction closes.
