BMW i4 fails to impress with Euro NCAP crash test results

The team of Euro NCAP researchers was less than pleased with the electronic aid performance of the all-electric BMW i4 in crash tests, awarding it four stars.

The safety of the driver, adult passengers and children was given a fairly high 87. The study noted that passengers were nearly guaranteed to survive a crash regardless of their age, constitution and position in the seat. The pedestrians, on the other hand, were found at risk from rigid a-pillars and hood cover edge.

Things went down fast in the active safety department, where the supposedly high-tech i4 only managed to score 64 percent. The crew discovered that the car was still using the same sensor suite as the 2019 3-Series, which can be considered seriously outdated tech given how fast technologies evolve.

Aging tech was not the only issue, of course. The car plainly failed to see an incoming vehicle approaching it during a left turn. It also never recognized a pedestrian on the street during a right turn. The test results were similarly bad for the RWD and AWD variants of the car.

Aside from the i4, Euro NCAP tested the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Cupra Born, Kia Sportage and Mercedes T-Class, which were awarded five stars out of five for safety, and the Toyota Aygo X, which was given four stars.
