The Chinese Ministry of Industry and IT has officially allowed BYD to begin mass-producing its Yangwang U9 hypercar. Earlier reports had claimed it would get four e-motors rated at 1,100 PS, but AutoHome says it was patented with a superior powertrain capable of 1,305 PS (1,287 hp / 960 kW).
The sales of the car – which is expected to begin at 1,000,000 CNY or $140,000 USD – will start in 2024. In the meantime, let’s throw a glance at the spec sheet.
The coupe is 4.966 mm long, 2,029 mm wide and 1,295 mm tall with 2.9 meters between the axles and 21-inch wheels. The certification shots found in the gallery below suggest that it has changed much since the original announcement. The whole body kit has been redesigned, although the elaborate wheel arches and the boomerang-shaped headlights have stayed the same.
Speaking of other interesting details, there is a pop-up spoiler, a rather impressive rear wing and a rear diffuser with active louvers in it. The latter two components will likely be available as paid options, while the base trim will make do with a more mundane-looking spoiler and BYD’s trademark roof fin.
Four electric motors mounted one per each wheel will supply 326 PS (322 hp / 240 kW) each. The combined output of 1,305 metric horsepower will let the U9 hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in two seconds and ultimately reach 300 km/h (186 mph), according to the manufacturer.
It is also official that the car weighs 2,475 kilograms (5,456 pounds). The battery size and specifications are unknown. Rumor has it BYD is targeting a maximum range of 700 km (435 miles) with the U9.
