The formidable Yangwang U9 has just received a new version in China. It looks largely the same as before, but slams each wheel with more than twice the power, for a combined 3,000+ horsepower. CarNewsChina reports quoting its own sources that it could be track-only, though.
The original Yangwang U9 debuted in 2024 with four 326-PS (322-hp / 240-kW) motors driving one wheel each. Working together, they exert 1,306 PS (1,288 hp / 960 kW) and take the coupe from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.36 seconds.
Back when it introduced the car, Yangwang claimed it would be able to reach 309 km/h (192 mph). In reality, though, it managed to score a top speed of 391.94 km/h (243.5 mph) on the Papenburg proving ground in Germany, earning the title of China’s fastest production vehicle in history. The battery may not be too big at 80 kWh, but it is still enough for a 450-km (280-mile) CLTC range.
According to reports, the new version will be called Track Edition and will not be street-legal. It will allegedly up the individual motor output to 755 PS (745 hp / 555 kW), for a grand total of 3,019 PS (2,978 hp / 2,220 kW). The OEM-rated top speed will reach 350 km/h (217 mph) in this version.
While the automaker itself stays silent, CnEVPost speculates that the motors may be coming from BYD Group. That company unveiled a prototype e-motor this spring that could rev up to 30,511 RPM and exert 789 PS (778 hp / 580 kW). These motors are already being used in the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV lineups, where they are installed one per vehicle and only drive the rear axle. It’s unclear how Yangwang plans to deal with the heat coming from four such units at once.
A U9 prototype had spent a few months on the Nürburgring racetrack last year gathering telemetry and getting its systems fine-tuned for production. Among other things, the company focused on making it smart hydraulic/air suspension setup known as the DiSus-X as efficient as possible.
In June 2025, Yangwang said that the U9 would be returning to the North Loop for another production vehicle record. The specific dates remain unannounced, but we suppose that the company plans to refresh the road-legal U9 model at roughly the same time as releasing its track-only counterpart.
