Changan accuses Geely of plagiarism

The Galaxy EV sub-brand recently announced by Geely and its first production cars may be subject to a lawsuit in China. According to CarNewsChina, another car manufacturer – Changan – accuses the company of plagiarism, arguing that the Geely Galaxy Light Concept steals from multiple Changan production car designs at once.

The report does not clarify which specific models those are, but a mere look at the concept car leaves the impression that it takes strongly after the Changan Uni-V. Both models have similar-shaped headlights, frameless radiator grilles and side bumper inserts. The Geely has an edge in sleek futurism, but this is hardly surprising given it’s merely a design study and not an actual mass-market car.

Changan now demands that Geely refrain from copying its design features and says it reserves the right for new legal action. For its own part, Geely rejects all charges calling them unfounded and reputation-damaging.

The above notwithstanding, the issue might actually lie in the identity of the designer who came up with the Geely Light Concept. Chen Zhengcheng had spent around two decades working for Changan before assuming the position of Design VP at Geely in March 2022. His portfolio included such well-known models as the Changan Eado saloon and the entire Uni lineup.
