A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, one out of only 165 such cars made in Maranello, will go on sale in the UK in mid-June evaluated at the equivalent of 7,600,000 USD.
The Ferrari 250 lineup incorporated all kinds of different cars. The GT SWB was essentially a racecar in Grand Tourer disguise. The 165 examples of it made from 1959 until 1962 had different technical specifications.
The letters ‘SWB’ mean ‘short wheelbase’. It amounts to 2.4 meters (93.75 inches) on the GT SWB, even less than the 2.6 meters (101.56 inches) of its predecessor, the 250 GT Berlinetta TdF. Compared to that car, the GT SWB is also more rounded and weighs less thanks to a lighter chassis. It is also Prancing Horse’s first production car with standard disc brakes.
Power for the Italian exotic is provided by a 3.0-liter V12 mill mated to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Back in its prime days, the engine produced 240 PS (237 hp / 177 kW).
The example heading to the auction is number 34 in its production batch. It has changed multiple owners, some of whom had modified its body. However, the latest buyer ordered a large-scale restoration to revert the exterior to its original state. The powertrain has remained stock all along, which explains the seven-digit selling estimates. In fact, we are told that red leather trim is the only major non-stock thing that this 250 GT has – the original was black.
