Rare Ferrari 250 GTO racer crops up on sale in the UK

The 250 GTO enjoys the status of the most expensive Ferrari vehicle ever, so it is rare to see one pop up at a public auction. Nonetheless, one out of the 36 examples produced in total is currently up for grabs at Tom Hartley Jr in Great Britain. The asking price is on a need-to-know basis, and it’s a safe bet that it is well into the eight-digit GBP domain.

Back in 1962 and 1963, the Italian automaker made 33 250 GTO models equipped with a Series I body type. From 1964 onwards, Ferrari has used a different body design. Out of these cars, 21 were built with the steering wheel on the left-hand side, and the example on sale is one of them.

The chassis No 3527GT saw its track debut at the 1962 Tour de France race (No 3527GT). The Scuderia Filipinetti team proceeded to use it in various motorsports events through 1965, winning a fair number of them. The car was then retrofitted to be drivable on public roads. The seller claims it still retains many OEM components, including the entire body, transmission and rear axle. The 3.0-liter Colombo V12 is also original and pumps out around 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) to the wheels.

Going from one high-end car collection to another with no actual use in between, the coupe is said to remain in flawless condition despite its age.
