Iran designs another high-riding hatchback on outdated Peugeot tech

Iran-based carmaker Iran Khodro (IKCO) has unveiled a life-size mock-up of a planned new production car named TF21. The prototype lacks interior and drivetrain, and has opaque windows all around. Still, according to Khodrobank, the compact car will eventually reach the market and replace the Peugeot 206 produced in the country under license.

The five-door hatchback has SUV-like traits including a large front bumper and a rugged-looking plastic body kit. As usual, it is all likely a tribute to the public preference of the SUV stylistic, not a claim to any overlanding abilities.

The production car is expected to be based on the abovementioned Peugeot 206 platform, which could receive a mild brush-up. Among other things, Peugeot said it wanted to ensure the car corresponded to the internationally accepted production standards. It is already official, though, that the current-gen 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine rated at 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW) gets to stay around for a bit longer. The only innovation the company is considering is adding a six-speed manual transmission option as an alternative to the existing five-speed one.

Customers in Iran will have three TF21 trim levels to choose from. Depending on the level, the car may or may not get ESP, tire pressure control, 15-inch wheels, rain and light sensors, a multimedia system with a 7-inch display, and a multi-function steering wheel wrapped in leather.

The assembly is set to begin in a couple of years, with no further specifics at this time.
