Following in the tire tracks of many other North American automakers, Jeep has acknowledged the elephant in the room: the company isn’t ready to say goodbye to the V8 engine any time soon.
The admission came from Jeep CEO Robert Broderdorf as cited by Carscoops. In his recent interview, Broderdorf admitted that the company didn’t just feel like keeping the V8 alive in the current generation – it intended to keep developing new eight-cylinder engines in the future. Among other things, the Wrangler lineup needs such an engine to stay viable. The current version has 6.4 liters of displacement and 477 PS (470 hp / 351 kW).
He didn’t provide any details on the future of the V8, but it’s worth remembering that Jeep announced a comeback of the SRT performance division not long ago. It’s possible that we may see new cars with SRT8 and Trackhawk badges on the streets again.
Last but not least, Broderdorf mentioned developing “other powertrains” as well. This could be referring to hybrid systems like the one apparently powering the new Grand Wagoneer. In the spy shots that we posted here just a few days ago, it had a distinct extra door in a front fender that could be concealing a charging port.
