Lamborghini’s first EV is a four-seat, VW-based Gran Turismo

As we reported the other day, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the company would launch its first all-electric vehicle until 2025. Here are some follow-up details from the Italian sports car maker.

The first EV will be a Gran Turismo with four seats arranged in a 2+2 layout. The body type remains unspecified, but our bet is on two doors.

This would not the first time Lambo toyed around with the idea of a coupe-shaped battery car. The Estoque Concept (shown in our gallery and the video) saw the daylight as far back as 2008, but the world economic crisis prevented it from going into production. Ten years ago, Winkelmann said that SUVs weren’t the right vehicle type for Lamborghini, while grand tourers absolutely were. In the end, however, it was the Urus that reached the market, and not a GT.

The Raging Bull returned to the concept car in 2016 and 2019, promising to launch it on an all-electric basis. Rumors had claimed that the company had intended to use the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) co-designed by Audi and Porsche for the production. The recent reports all indicate that Volkswagen’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) may be used instead. Volkswagen itself intends to design its next flagship, codenamed Project Trinity, using this chassis and tech combo.
