Lexus LBX to get a flagship spec next year

Lexus started the sales of the new LBX in Japan this weekend. According to Mag-X, the company plans to launch a high-end version of the compact crossover SUV later on that will use the same engine as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

While not official yet, the report seems plausible enough given that the new Lexus LBX is based on the same platform and tech as the Toyota Yaris Cross. The design effort should be minimal.

As for the engine itself, it is a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder mill rated up to 304 PS (300 hp / 221 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in Toyota hot hatches. Mag-X believes that Lexus will primarily offer it with a six-speed manual transmission, but may later add an eight-speed automatic option for those not interested in rowing their own gears.
