Toyota shelves its rumored LFA successor until 2026

When announcing its work-in-progress lineup several weeks ago, Toyota hinted at a supercar that many of us believed to be an ideological successor to the Lexus LFA. Some of us hoped to see it at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show in late October, but it now sounds like we may have to wait another several months.

The news comes from CarBuzz referencing a comment from Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda. Speaking in a recent interview, he reportedly explained that there were “circumstances” preventing the car from debuting this year. He didn’t provide any further details, but with lots of other premieres scheduled for the expo, we suppose Toyota wouldn’t want to show us too many cars at once.

Now that the premiere has been postponed, rumors claim that the company’s first supercar in a while may hit the spotlight of the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon in early January.

Toyoda declined comment when asked whether the coupe has Toyota or Lexus branding. We saw camouflaged prototypes of it during the Goodwood Festival of Speed (see video), where they were officially presented by Toyota. On the other hand, Lexus teased a mysterious concept car back in August that shared a number of design traits with the LFA. In other words, it remains to be seen.

The powertrain type is another mystery. CarBuzz speculates that the car will most likely use a hybridized V8 engine.
