Lotus Esprit revival looks on point, costs £430k

UK-based vehicle restoration outfit Encor has revealed its latest program. It takes the Lotus Esprit S1 coupe from 1975 as the source of inspiration, promising a production run of 50 high-end restomods equipped with a temperamental 3.5-liter V8.

Despite being referred to as “Series 1”, the actual donor vehicle is a Series 4 Esprit coupe produced for the 1994 model year. Encor explains that the chassis of the last Esprit generation is simply too reliable and technologically advanced to consider earlier designs. Custom carbon-fiber bodywork disguises it to look like the S1 while keeping the curb weight below 1.2 metric tons (2,645 pounds). The exterior looks modernized in places, but still draws upon many of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s design techniques.

A peek inside the engine bay reveals what the company calls Type 918: a modern engine equipped with turbochargers, forged pistons and performance-focused injectors. It delivers 406 PS (400 hp / 299 kW) along with 474 Nm (350 lb-ft) of torque, a massive improvement over the original’s 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW).

A reworked five-speed manual transmission sends the momentum to the rear end, taking the coupe from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under four seconds. The top speed is estimated at 281 km/h (175 mph). Encor promises an authentic driving experience supported by hydraulic power steering, modern suspension components, AP Racing brakes and other improvements.

The conversion alone costs £430,000 in the UK, which translates to $570,000. You are still expected to procure your own Lotus Esprit S4, as it’s not included in the price.
