Mazda promises to keep MX-5 afloat, as long as it becomes electrified

In a recent statement, Mazda promised us to electrify its entire model range by the beginning of the next decade. Brand fans started worrying about the fate of the MX-5/Miata roadster, and here’s what the company has to say.

While by no means the best-selling Mazda on the market, the MX-5 is essential as a brand icon. As such, it will remain in the lineup for a while longer as an electrified or full-electric model. No specifics have been revealed in this regard, but we assume that low weight and affordability may continue to be its priorities.

Since a purely electric mini-roadster would turn out heavier and more expensive than its predecessor (you can see the current model in our gallery and the video), it would make the most sense for the MX-5/Miata to go hybrid. Part-electric open-top cars are still a barely populated niche on the international market, so Mazda could benefit from having some headway in this regard.

The Japanese automaker expects fully electric cars to generate only 25% of its sales by the early 2030s, so the other three-quarters of the market will still be populated by ICE engines. New release plans for the coming four years include three EVs, five PHEVs, and five mild hybrids.
