Motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha will be attending the Japan Mobility show in Tokyo this month with a rather unusual vehicle. It resembles a two-seat roadster with just one wheel at the back, but a steering mechanism that can turn all three wheels at once.
The trike is based on the Tricera Concept unveiled a couple of years ago (see video). Compared to that one, the new version looks much more polished and road-ready, at the expense of some crazy futuristic design traits of the original. Unfortunately, Yamaha hasn’t confirmed yet whether it ever plans to produce three-wheelers like this or is simply experimenting.
Starting with the front end, it now looks almost like that of a normal Yamaha bike, but the wheels are wide apart and almost completely exposed. The body wears a low-drag aero kit, and the interior offers two full-fledged seats with tall backs – the concept had minimalistic recliner seats instead.
Compared to the early design, the updated Tricera has side mirrors and normal anti-roll bars behind the seats instead of headrests doubling as anti-roll bars. The two-part windshield arrangement has grown in size as well, and the steering wheel has assumed a more or less traditional shape.
The trike rides on electricity, and that’s all we know about the powertrain so far. Stay tuned for the show opening on October 30th to learn more.
