The current-gen Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which debuted five years ago, will be retiring in the first quarter of 2024, Business Insider claims quoting an alleged leak of the company’s internal documents. A new G-Class is expected to be released in the same year that will offer an all-electric powertrain option for the first time in history.
Judging by the market statistics, Mercedes plans to continue selling its current stock and delivering vehicles against all orders placed so far. The successor to the current G-Wagon, according to Project Lead Dr. Emmerich Schiller, will sport a more aerodynamic shape and come with more fuel-efficient engines, some of them hybrids.
The all-electric EQG has only debuted as a concept so far, sporting a robust body-on-frame design, per-wheel suspension at the front and a solid beam at the rear. Unlike its ICE counterpart, the off-roader has four electric motors driving one wheel each, allowing it to perform advanced maneuvers like the Tank Turn (standing 360-degree turn) and others.
