43-year-old, low-mileage Mercedes-Benz SL becomes a showroom exhibit

SL Shop, a UK-based dealer and restorer of exotic Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has shared a story of a rather remarkable 500 SL model from 1982. The car was never driven or even registered, and while its owner considered selling it, a decision was made instead to turn it into a time capsule on display.

A resident of Midlands, UK, known only as Mr. Hof, purchased the car new 43 years ago, making sure to option it with every single OEM option available at the time. Once in his possession, it was towed into his climate-controlled dry garage with as few as 42 miles (67.5 kilometers) on the odo. It still has that mileage.

A decade and a half ago, the owner went to an auto event where he met a representative of SL Shop. Mr. Hof told him about the car, but declined a buying offer. Fast-forward to the present day, and he went back to SL Shop with an offer of his own. After examining the car, the dealer concluded that it was still in great overall condition, with OEM wraps still left in places, as-new exterior and an impressively well-preserved leather interior.

According to SL Shop, this particular 500 SL could easily fetch a small fortune with collectors and even go for more than $250,000+ at a public auction. However, Mr. Hof once again changed his mind about the sale. He reckons that the car will make a fine exhibit at the SL Shop HQ instead, where all true fans of automotive classics will be able to have a good look at it.
