SsangYong reveals Rally Dakar concept car, looks pretty extreme

South Korean car manufacturer SsangYong has unveiled Rexton DKR, a rally modification of the popular mid-size SUV. It will participate in the Rally Dakar starting in January 2019.

The car is based on a chrome-molybdenum (CrMo) pipe frame and comes powered by a 450-hp (336-kW) gasoline engine. It also features a six-speed sequential transmission with a three-disc carbon clutch that can withstand up to 1,500 Nm (1,106 pound-feet) of torque.

The prototype vehicle weighs 1,900 kilograms (~4,200 lb) and only needs 4.4 seconds to accelerate 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph). Its top going speed is limited at 195 km/h (121 mph).

Let’s see just how well the new Rexton DKR SUV holds its own at the upcoming Rally Dakar. The SsangYong team failed to make it into the top 30 last year, so it is going to be quite a challenge.
