Rinspeed microSnap is a compact-sized, self-driving taxi concept that just might make it into series

Car manufacturer Rinspeed has unveiled microSnap, a small, self-driving, multipurpose vehicle suited for intense urban use. According to the company, investors met the project with considerable enthusiasm, which just might mean that the car eventually makes it into series production. Let’s have a closer look.

The Rinspeed microSnap consists of a chassis part called Skateboard and a body/cabin part called Pod. The two parts can be designed and improved individually from each other while remaining compatible at all times.

The vehicle is 2,626 mm (8.62 ft.) long and only 1,335 mm (4.38 ft.) wide. It comes powered by a rear-axle electric motor producing 18 hp (13 kW) and 57 Nm (42 pound-feet) of torque. It can accelerate to a maximum of 75 km/h (47 mph) and cover up to 95 km (60 mi) on a single charge. The manufacturer finds these figures sufficient for urban use.

Depending on the task at hand, the Skateboard can accommodate different kinds of modules, suited both for people transportation and cargo hauling. There is an innovative idea behind the project, too: the company plans to develop a computer-based control system which will be able to process the incoming orders and adjust the modules accordingly. For example, if there is currently no need for taxis, the cars get automatically equipped with cargo modules and switch to the delivery function.

Allegedly, this will enable the Rinspeed microSnap network to operate 24/7, with individual cars only pausing to replenish the batteries.

The car will celebrate its live premiere at the 2019 CES show in Las-Vegas.
