Porsche 911 goes hybrid

August Achleitner, Porsche engineer in charge of product planning, revealed some important details concerning the upcoming 8th generation of the 911 family. Among other things, he said the company will offer a hybrid-powered 911 model for the first time in history. This new 911 may end up with either a plug-in hybrid or a mild-hybrid system on board. Chances are also good that Porsche will eventually come out with an all-electric 911.

According to him, the hybrid Porsche 911 will feature multiple reworked components, including the engine, the transmission and the AWD system. Apparently, the latter will be modified to be able to deliver up to 50% of torque to the front wheels.

August Achleitner refused to provide any performance estimates, but hinted that the power output of the car would be comparable with that of the hybrid Panamera Turbo S. This likely means the 911 will be getting around 680 hp (507 kW).

The company introduced the 8th generation of its 911 range last month. The sports vehicle series held onto its iconic exterior, but received an interior overhaul and a better selection of engines.
