General Motors patents power doors that factor in wind force

Car giant General Motors has applied for patent rights on an innovative power-assisted car door design. The main feature of the new door opening mechanism is that it takes the current wind force into consideration. The next-generation Corvette C8 might be the first vehicle to benefit from the new door tech.

The ‘smart’ door mechanism consists of a rotary actuator, a control unit and a position sensor. The system first measures the current wind resistance and then applies the necessary force to swing the door open. It also scans the area around the car at all times to avoid collisions with trees, poles etc.

According to the manufacturer, the new Corvette C8 will feature a custom suspension equipped with a lift system, as well as an active aero kit. A 1,000-hp (745-kW) hybrid trim will also be available. However, the company had to postpone the market launch due to major problems with certain electrical components of the new car.
