Leaked: This is what the next-gen VW Passat looks like

As you may have heard, Volkswagen will be unveiling its next-generation Passat lineup at the upcoming motor show in Detroit. In the meantime, first spy images of the car have already leaked online.

It should be noted that the U.S. version of the Passat is quite different from those meant for the other markets. For instance, it is only available as a sedan/saloon, while the European lineup also includes a wagon/estate version. The differences reach all the way down to the architecture: the U.S. version of the Passat still rides on the old PQ46 platform, which means it won’t be available with a hybrid drivetrain or even a digital dashboard.

On the outside, novelty is pretty scarce, too. The radiator grille becomes a bit larger, the front and rear lighting gets a minor restyle, and the third window near the C-pillar looks slightly altered, too.

That, and the car you can see on the photos belongs to the R-line trim with its sporty aero kit and a trunk-mounted spoiler. The chrome pinstripe is no longer there, but there is a new inscription saying “Passat”.

In the United States, the next-generation Passat will still ship with the same old 2.0-liter turbocharged engine good for 176 hp (131 kW) and 250 Nm (184 pound-feet) of torque.
