First Toyota GR Supra sells for 42x the list price

The first mass-produced copy of the new Toyota GR Supra just went under the hammer at the annual Barret-Jackson auction priced at a ludicrous U.S. $2,100,000. To put things into perspective, the base trim begins at about U.S. $50,000. Toyota will be donating the money thus earned for charity.

The car sold is a unique Toyota GR Supra Global #1, the only vehicle in the entire production batch to have a VIN number ending in 20201 (denoting the model year and the serial number). It is essentially a U.S.-sold Toyota GR Supra Launch Edition car painted matte grey, but otherwise stock.

Along with the car, the winning bidder gets two VIP tickets to the 2019 Toyota Owners 400 race, where they will be able to make several laps sitting next to professional NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip, as well as try out their skills driving a pace car. They will also be getting a custom-tailored racing suit as an extra gift of appreciation.

The revived Toyota GR Supra series celebrated its live premiere at the ongoing 2019 Detroit Motor Show.
