Porsche 911 line gets new Wet Mode feature

Aside from stronger engines, the eighth iteration of the Porsche 911 series will take advantage of certain improved safety and assistance-oriented features. Perhaps the most interesting of these is called the Porsche Wet Mode, and it is essentially a driver’s aid that helps you drive efficiently on wet roads.

This is how it works: there are special acoustic sensors hidden under the front wheel arches that can detect wet ground surface. Once detected, a warning indicator lights up on the dashboard, inviting the driver to switch to Wet Mode. Activating Wet Mode has an impact on virtually any major system of the Porsche 911. To name just a few, the throttle response becomes more linear, the torque vectoring system begins to prioritize sending torque to the front wheels, and an active rear wing extends in Performance Mode whenever the car speeds over 90 km/h (55 mph).

Activating the mode also makes acceleration, braking and switching gears much smoother than usual, while still responsive enough to be safe.

According to Porsche, the feature imposes no artificial limits on the top going speed or engine output, so you’ll still need to be careful at all times to avoid aquaplaning when driving on wet asphalt, ice or snow.

The 8th-generation Porsche 911 premiered at the Los-Angeles Auto Show last fall.
