Volvo announces new features for safe driving

A few years ago, car manufacturer Volvo unveiled its Vision 2020 strategy aimed at making its cars completely safe for the driver and passengers by the year 2020. Ultimately striving to eliminate all causes of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents, the company proceeded to implement a series of new passive and active safety features in its newer models, and is still working on improving these. A couple weeks ago, Volvo announced that it would clamp the top speed at 180 km/h (112 mph) across its entire vehicle range. Today, it revealed two more technologies designed to combat such issues as driver drowsiness, lack of attention, and drunken driving.

To determine whether the driver is intoxicated, two or three cameras located inside the car will constantly monitor his/her facial expressions, the extent to which both eyes are opened, the gaze direction etc. A few dedicated sensors will additionally monitor the reaction speed of the driver. If any abnormalities are detected, the software will limit the speed of the car and immediately contact a Volvo on Call operator for a warning. If the driver fails to properly react to the warning, the car will emergency park itself by the roadside.

All cars based on the SPA2 platform will take advantage of the feature starting in 2020 or later.

Another new invention comes in the form of the programmable Volvo Care Key. All Volvo cars will ship with it in base starting next summer. Using it, the driver will be able to specify the maximum allowed speed beyond which the car will not accelerate under any circumstances. This is useful for situations when several people share the same car and some of them are inexperienced and/or careless drivers.
