The new, Chinese Chevrolet Onix turns out a refreshed 2016 Chevrolet Cavalier

When Chevrolet announced its new Onix sedan/saloon for China, many remembered that the car marque already has another model with the exact same name – a compact hatchback currently available in Latin America. So, is the new Onix anything like its namesake? Apparently not! Instead, it is a thoroughly redone 2016 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Just like the Cavalier, the new Onix utilizes the simplified Delta chassis initially introduced by the first-generation Chevrolet Cruze. It has the same wheelbase as the Cavalier (2,600 millimeters / 8.5 feet), but smaller body dimensions. At 4,474 mm (14.7 ft.) long and 1,730 mm (5.7 ft. wide), it is 70 mm (2.7 inches) shorter and 49 mm (1.9 inches) narrower than its predecessor.

The manufacturer has so far only showed us the top trim version called Redline, complete with 16-inch wheels and a contrast-rich color scheme. You can find exterior photos of the standard trim on the Patent Office website, though, so no mystery here. The interior, on the other hand, remains to be seen.

The Chinese car will ship with a choice between a 1.3-liter naturally aspirated engine rated at 103 hp (77 kW) and a 1.0-liter turbo engine churning out 116 hp (87 kW). The manufacturer says nothing about the transmission, and the 2016 Chevrolet Cavalier shipped with quite a selection of those, including manual, six-speed automatic, and even a DCT.

The new Chevrolet Onix will enter assembly in the car factory jointly owned by SAIC and General Motors, and will arrive in the summer of 2019. Since the Cavalier was an international release, there is a certain possibility that the Onix also makes it to markets other than China eventually.
