Sportage-based Kia KX5 goes on sale in China

The joint enterprise formed between Kia Motors, Yueda Group, and Dongfeng Motor Corporation has announces the sales start of the “Kia KX5” – essentially a slightly modified Kia Sportage with a different front fascia.

More specifically, the KX5 is missing Kia’s trademark tiger-nose fascia. Instead, it sports narrow multi-section headlights combined with a chrome-rimmed front grille.

In turn, the vehicle rear looks virtually unchanged, save for the different taillight hardware and a glossy strip running between the taillights.

Interior changes are more pronounced. The air vents have moved to a different position, the climate control is now sensor-based, the multimedia display appears to “hover” above the dashboard, and the dash layout, including the 7-inch digital instrument panel, has changed quite a bit.

The Kia KX features a 360-degree camera view system, a wireless charger, and an AI-assisted voice control feature.

The Chinese version of the Sportage comes with a choice between two engines: a 1.6-liter turbo V4 rated at 177 hp (132 kW) and 265 Nm (195 lbft) of torque, and a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated unit producing 162 hp (121 kW) and 203 Nm (150 lbft). Transmissions include six-speed automatic and seven-speed DCT.

Prices begin at 154,800 Chinese Yuan.
