Hyundai reveals details on its 3rd-gen modular car architecture

South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has shared with us some principal information concerning its upcoming third-generation modular car architecture. The next-gen Hyundai Sonata sedan/saloon will be the first car to take advantage of it.

Allegedly, the new chassis has much better noise and vibration resistance while also being more rigid and overall safer than the previous generation. It also looks like it brings along certain design changes, such as lower roof and hood lines and shorter overhangs (see the promotional video to get an idea of what this means in practical terms). Perhaps more importantly, it now has a lower center of gravity and is 5% lighter than before, meaning better overall steering and acceleration.

One of the main features of the new architecture comes in the form of a reinforced car front that distributes the collision force along three vectors, thus improving driver and passenger safety in traffic accidents. Heavy-duty stainless-steel parts also contribute to the overall safety by making the car shift, rather than turn, when hit head-to-head and the collision area is small enough.

Reportedly, the Hyundai engineer team has extensively redesigned the undercarriage, too, improving both its weight distribution and aerodynamic efficiency. The former applies to hybrid cars as well, with the traction battery now residing inside the wheelbase rectangle.

Hyundai intends to use the new architecture for its IC, hybrid and all-electric cars alike.
