Mercedes’ largest SUV debuts in the USA with bouncy suspension

Mercedes has unveiled the third generation of its largest crossover SUV – the GLS – at the 2019 International Auto Show in New York, USA. The updated car boasts 3,137 millimeters (10.3 ft.) of wheelbase, up 60 mm (2.4 inches) from the previous model.

On the outside, the Mercedes-Benz GLS looks more or less like the new GLE. In fact, it utilizes the same MHA automobile platform as the GLE, which features a sophisticated hydro-pneumatic suspension system known as the E-Active Body Control. Powered by a 48V on-board power network, it scans the road surface for quality and configures the shock absorbers accordingly. It can even cause the car to ‘bounce’ suddenly when it detects large potholes or uneven terrain ahead.

Customers will be offered a choice between two trim versions, the 450 and the 580. The former packs a 3.0-liter turbo V6 rated at 366 hp (273 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lbft) of torque. The more expensive GLS 580 offers a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 capable of 490 hp (365 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lbft) of torque. Both link to the same nine-speed automatic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS comes with a 4WD by default and features a high-end MBUX multimedia system that shares its display with the digital instrument panel, seats with power adjustments (all three rows), heating, massage, and ventilation (first and second rows only), five-zone climate control, 64-color ambient lighting, and a powerful audio system.

Another interesting feature of the flagship SUV comes in the form of a dedicated ‘Car Wash’ button that automatically folds the side mirrors and seals the windows.

Standard and available electronic driver aids include adaptive cruise control, HUD, 360-degree surround view cameras, parking assistance, and more.

The next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLS will arrive at showrooms later this year.
