Vilner restores a Trabant 1.1 sedan, East Germany’s automotive icon

Bulgarian car tuner Vilner has completed working on a full restoration and modernization of a Trabant 1.1 mini sedan/saloon. The car left the garage with new interior and headlights.

The cabin now boasts expensive dual-layer leather upholstery with soft padding and occasional inserts of soft fabric. The new trim covers the door cards, the seats and the dashboard, with only the headrests remaining in their original state. The multimedia system may look like a retro car stereo, but the tech inside is state-of-the-art.

Fulfilling the customer’s specific request, Vilner removed all Trabant logos from the car’s pillars, roof and sides, and put badges that read ‘21’ in their place. It also upgraded the headlights to use LED-based DRLs and turn blinkers, and painted the wheels and roof to match the plaid pattern of the cabin.

The 1990 Trabant 1.1 came equipped with a 1.1-liter VW Polo engine rated at 45 horsepower (33.6 kilowatts), which linked to a four-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain proved sufficient for urban use, given the car’s low weight of just 700 kilograms (slightly over 1,500 lbs).
