2nd-gen Peugeot 2008 comes out of the shadow at last

A mere four months after the debut of the new Peugeot 208, the French carmaker has officially introduced the second generation of its 2008 model. That said, the two cars share the same architecture (CMP) and main components, so there is little surprise one debuted straight after the other.

In terms of exterior design, the newcomer looks a fair bit more aggressive than its predecessor. You may also easily mistake it for the 3008 if you look at it from behind or from a side. The dimensions have changed, if only by a small margin. The new Peugeot 2008 is 1,530 mm (5.02 ft.) tall, 1,770 mm (5.81 ft.) wide and 4,300 mm (14.11 ft.) long with 2,650 mm (8.69 ft.) between the axles.

Open the door, and you will be greeted by a digital dashboard and a larger, standalone multimedia display that now measures 10 inches across (previously: 5.7”). Transmission is automatic, and there is a tilting joystick for switching gears. You may pay extra to add a HUD display, a row of aircraft-style controls over the center console, and a servo-boosted handbrake.

The more expensive trims will ship with such standard features as LED headlights, black trim scheme, 18-inch wheels, and bucket seats. A high-end audio system and a panoramic glass roof will be optionally available. Last but not least, the next generation will be able to take advantage of numerous electronic driver aids, including automatic emergency brake and adaptive cruise control.

Customers in Europe will be able to buy their Peugeot 2008 with an assortment of 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engines to choose from, rated at 100, 130 and 155 horsepower (75, 97 and 116 kilowatts, respectively). There will also be two 1.5-liter diesel variants: 100 and 130 hp (75 / 97 kW). Regardless of your engine choice, the transmission can be either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The car comes strictly front-driven, but there is a feature called Grip Control that should compensate for the lack of a 4WD system by dynamically adjusting the anti-skid settings.

There is another good news for the environmentally conscious. The range now contains a pure EV called the Peugeot e-2008. The car comes equipped with an electric motor producing 136 hp (101 kW) and a 50 kWh battery good for 310 kilometers (193 miles) of WLTP-rated range.

Sales in Europe begin close to the end of 2019.
