FAW-Volkswagen launches the new Jetta VS5 in China

Jetta is no longer just the name of a popular Volkswagen sedan/saloon, but also a new sub-brand that VW intends to use for selling its more affordable vehicles in China. The FAW-Volkswagen joint enterprise reports it is ready to begin production of the first three Jetta models, and the Jetta VS5 will be the first vehicle to hit the showrooms in September 2019.

The Jetta VS5 is a compact crossover SUV that essentially represents a trimmed-down version of the Europe-sold Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca. The car comes based on the MQB architecture and has the same wheelbase length as the Karoq/Ateca (2,630 mm / 8.63 ft.). At 4,419 mm (14.5 ft.) long, it is marginally longer than the above two.

According to Chinese media, the production cost cuts are mostly noticeable in the cabin, which sports cheap seat upholstery, hard plastic finish, and poor noise insulation. Paid options include two-zone climate control, a multimedia system with a large touchscreen display, power-assisted front seats, and adaptive cruise control.

The Jetta VS5 will ship in September packing a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 150 hp (112 kW). An Aisin six-speed automatic transmission will send the power to the front wheels (no other drive options available). On a somewhat brighter note, the rear suspension sports a multi-link design.

The companies do not reveal exact pricing yet, but mention that the SUV will be cheaper than its same-architecture sibling, the Karoq, which starts from U.S. $20,000 in China.
