Skoda Scala gets a gasoline/CNG combo engine

Skoda has announced a new version of its Scala hatchback. Called the G-TEC, it packs a one-liter, three-cylinder engine that can operate on gasoline/petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG).

Partnered to a six-speed manual transmission, the engine outputs 90 hp (67 kW) and 160 Nm (118 pound-feet) of torque to the wheels. The gas tank is relatively small and rated for only 220 kilometers (137 miles) of range. The CNG cylinders hidden in the bottom rear part of the vehicle can hold enough for another 410 km (255 mi), though. The resulting total range therefore amounts to a decent 630 km (392 mi).

The original Skoda Skala debuted late last year as the Czech manufacturer’s first car to take advantage of the Volkswagen MQB-A0 platform. It shipped with a choice among four engines, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 95 hp / 71 kW, a similar unit boosted to 115 hp / 86 kW, a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder with 150 hp (112 kW), and a 1.6-liter diesel with 115 hp / 86 kW. The weakest engine asks for a five-speed manual gearbox, whereas the other three offer a choice between six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT.
