Volvo XC90 gets fire, bullet and blast protection

Volvo has unveiled an armored version of its XC90 SUV. The car is said to be fire-resistant, bulletproof and blast-protected. The armor cladding adds 1,400 kilograms (3,085 lbs) to its weight, resulting in a grand total approaching 4.5 metric tons (10,000 lbs).

Volvo engineers have spent two years working on the project. As far as the protection is concerned, the SUV is certified to comply with the VPAM VR8 (ERV 2010) standard. This means 10 mm (0.4”) armor thickness and 50 mm (2”) glass thickness.

The impressive weight of the Volvo XC90 necessitated a series of reinforcements to the chassis and suspension, as well as installation of stronger brakes, the manufacturer says.

According to Stephan Green, Volvo’s Commercial Management Director, the armored cars will mainly be shipped to special services. Shipments will begin later this year, and you can already make a pre-order on the official Volvo website. Prices begin at £450,000. Next year, a lighter-armored version of the SUV will launch on the European and Latin American markets.

Volvo uses the same factory in Sweden to produce the XC90 donor vehicles and then ships them to German armored vehicle manufacturer Trasco Bremen for the armor cladding.
