Mustang Shelby GT500 shows itself at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Another day, another video from the Goodwood Festival of Speed! Ford’s single strongest road-legal vehicle had plenty of noisy, steamy fun at the big automotive celebration near Chichester, England. The steering wheel was manned by Vaughn Gittin Jr., a formidable drift master who had no trouble at all taking the car through its paces.

At its homeland, the Mustang 500 starts from U.S. $73,995 – comparable to what Dodge asks for a new 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.

The Shelby GT500 comes upgraded with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine delivering up to 771 horsepower (575 kilowatts) along with 847 Nm (625 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. Although, compared to the abovementioned Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with its 6.2 super V8 capable of 808 hp (603 kW) and 956 Nm (705 lb-ft), the Mustang Shelby GT500 isn’t such a tarmac destroyer after all.

Why the comparison? Because the two fight in the same quarter-mile league: both muscle cars finish the drag strip in under 11 seconds.

Fans are concerned that the new 7-speed Tremec DCT box is going to end up being the worst bottleneck for the impressive engine output of the car. Indeed, stomaching this much horsepower could prove challenging for the transmission.

Ford’s shiny new Shelby GT500 is slated to hit the showrooms in the coming fall.
