Audi RS7 Sportback evolves into a lightweight mobile fortress

If you have been following our news feed, then you know U.S.-based company Add Armor specializes in converting all sorts of cars into armor-clad, bullet- and blast-resistant vehicles. This Audi RS7 Sportback is their latest completed project.

As usual, the team made an emphasis on keeping the liftback as agile as possible. To that end, it has persuaded the stock engine to exert an impressive 760 horsepower (567 kilowatts) at the crank. As a result, the armored car sprints 0.4 seconds faster than its unmodded counterpart. APR, which helped with the tuning, said it could take the Audi RS7 Sportback’s twin-turbo V8 beyond 1,000 hp (745 kW) if need be.

To shield the German ride from various harmful impacts, including shotgun blasts and Magnum .44 bullets, Add Armor used an innovative polycarbonate-based kind of cladding. As a result, the car only gained about 100 kilograms (220 pounds). Most similar projects use stainless-steel plates that end up being 2.5 to 5 times as heavy. Nonetheless, the company assures us that under certain conditions, the polycarbonate cladding can be 10 times as efficient as the traditional steel armor.

Should you believe this statement or not? Up to you. The tuner did not put this particular vehicle under gunfire (it was a client’s order, after all), but it did test a similarly-cladded Cadillac Escalade V8 a while back. Watch the video to see how it fared.
